Hackstory is a 9-day virtual hackathon where students explore history through code by creating websites that spotlight real-world historical events. The goal is to combine storytelling, research, and design to bring untold or lesser-known historical stories to life online. Whether working solo or as a team, participants will uncover the past and present it in creative, digital form. This is your chance to code the past — and shape the future.

🛠️ Tools and Technologies

You can use any tools you’re comfortable with! Here are some suggestions:

  • Languages: HTML, CSS, JavaScript

  • Frameworks/Libraries (optional): Bootstrap, Tailwind CSS, React.js

  • Design: Figma, Canva, Adobe XD

  • Hosting: GitHub Pages, Netlify, Vercel

  • Version Control: Git & GitHub

  • Research: Google Scholar, JSTOR, History.com, Library of Congress

No framework or advanced coding required — a simple HTML/CSS site is 100% valid!

💡 Inspiration

Need ideas? Here are some starting points:

  • Unsung Heroes: Highlight someone whose story isn’t widely known

  • Movements: Civil rights, women’s suffrage, labor protests

  • Moments in Time: Local history, indigenous history, forgotten battles

  • Themes: Injustice, innovation, resistance, migration

Your project should aim to teach, inspire, or challenge — through design, storytelling, and accuracy.
